CIC energiGUNE presented the NEXTCELL project at the 11th International Conference on Energy Materials and Applications (ICEMA 2026), held in Donostia/San Sebastián, Spain, from 20 to 23 May 2026.
ICEMA 2026 brought together researchers, scientists, engineers and students from academia and industry to present and discuss recent developments in energy materials and their applications. The conference programme covered topics including energy materials, hydrogen energy, fuel cells, photovoltaics, nanomaterials, supercapacitors and other emerging energy technologies.
During the conference, Maica Morant from CIC energiGUNE presented the NEXTCELL project, highlighting its research into innovative lithium-ion battery cells based on a fully gellified cell architecture.
NEXTCELL is developing a new generation of Li-ion cells for high-capacity and high-voltage applications. The concept integrates gellified electrodes and a gellified separator with a high-voltage-stable gel electrolyte. This approach is intended to contribute to improved energy performance while reducing manufacturing complexity, energy consumption and safety risks.
